Covington County Hospital received and began to administer the county’s first Covid-19 vaccinations on Wednesday, December 23.
The hospital received 200 doses of the Moderna vaccine from the Mississippi State Department of Health. Front line workers such as Dr. Word Johnston, Emergency Room staff, workers for the Covid-19 drive thru testing center, members of EMS, and employees of Arrington Living Center were among the first to receive vaccinations.
“Receiving this vaccine makes me feel hopeful,” said Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner Jeff Mitchell. “This is another form of protection, along with the Personal Protective Equipment we wear each day, to help protect our hospital, staff and families.”
After staff members had the opportunity to be vaccinated, residents of Arrington Living Center began receiving vaccines as well. As of Tuesday, Dec. 29, most residents had opted to receive the vaccine with a few left to be administered.
Protocol for the Moderna vaccine requires a second dose of the vaccination to be given 28 days after the first.
In the next round of vaccinations, the hospital plans to begin administering doses to essential workers in the community, such as police officers, firefighters, and teachers.
