A conversation in Jackson, Mississippi, confirmed what James Arrington Goff already knew from personal experience: The swing bed program at Covington County Hospital is “top-notch.” His mother, Analyn Goff, has been a CCH swing-bed patient three times. Most recently, fluid in her lungs led to an Emergency Department visit, then a few days of inpatient treatment and a few weeks of swing bed follow-up. Skilled Nursing Care “Swing bed” is a healthcare industry term for skilled inpatient nursing care. The program allows patients to remain in the hospital to regain strength and receive therapy after their immediate problem has been treated. “She just needed time to regroup and get stronger,” Goff said of his 87-year- old mother. “It took about three or four weeks in swing bed to really get her in a position where she could leave.” His mother is very independent and insists on living alone, Goff said. The caregivers took those wishes into account as they designed and carried out her recovery program.
