CovingtonCares Magazine - Spring/Summer 2024

As we age, prioritizing regular physical activity becomes increasingly vital for maintaining overall health and well-being. Engaging in exercise not only helps prevent or delay many age-related health issues but also fosters strength and independence in performing daily activities. In this article, we’ll explore the recommended amount of physical activity for older adults and its profound impact on longevity and quality of life. Why Physical Activity Matters For older adults, incorporating regular physical activity into daily life offers a multitude of health benefits. It strengthens muscles, enhances flexibility, improves cardiovascular health, and boosts mood and cognitive function. Additionally, staying active helps maintain independence and reduces the risk of falls and injuries, contributing to a higher quality of life as we age. Recommended Physical Activity Guidelines According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adults aged 65 and older should aim for the following: 1. Moderate-Intensity Activity: Engage in at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling. This equates to approximately 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. 2. Vigorous-Intensity Activity: Alternatively, older adults can opt for 75 minutes per week of vigorous- intensity aerobic activity, such as hiking, jogging, or running. This can be broken down into shorter sessions throughout the week. 3. Strength Training: Incorporate activities that strengthen major muscle groups at least two days a week. This may include lifting weights, using resistance bands, or performing body-weight exercises like squats and push-ups. 4. Balance and Flexibility: Additionally, include activities to improve balance, such as standing on one foot or practicing yoga. Enhancing balance and flexibility reduces the risk of falls and promotes agility and coordination.
