Kimberly Bennett, LCSW-S, ICST at Covington Place Therapy & Counseling, has completed the training and qualifications necessary to become an Internationally Credentialed Sandtray Therapist (ICST). She attended the Southern Sandtray Institute in Jonesboro, Arkansas to complete the program.
Sandtray therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses a tray filled with sand and a collection of miniature figurines, objects, and symbols to facilitate self-expression and emotional healing. It is often used in counseling and psychotherapy, particularly with children, but it can also be beneficial for adolescents and adults.
“I am thrilled to be an officially credentialed Sandtray therapist,” said Bennett. “This training was absolutely amazing, plus I got to complete it with some amazing therapists from all across the country.”
A sandtray therapy client uses a shallow tray filled with sand as a “canvas” to create scenes or representations of their thoughts, feelings, or experiences that may be difficult to verbalize.
This type of therapy encourages exploration of unconscious thoughts and feelings and provides a safe space to process difficult emotions or trauma. This can be especially effective for children who may not have the vocabulary or ability to articulate their feelings. It is also useful for those processing trauma or facing difficult life transitions.
The therapist observes, guides, or interprets the client’s creation if appropriate. In some cases, they might engage in dialogue about the symbolism and meaning of the scene, but the emphasis is often on the client’s personal interpretation.
